Unlock Deep Relaxation by Releasing Your Psoas

Writer: Sarita-Linda RoccoSarita-Linda Rocco

Did you know that a single muscle could be influencing your posture, breath, and even your stress levels? The psoas muscle is a deep core muscle that connects your spine to your legs, playing a vital role in stability, movement, and relaxation.

When tight, the psoas can contribute to back pain, tension, and a persistent sense of unease. But when relaxed, it supports deep diaphragmatic breathing, fluid movement, and a grounded sense of calm.

Why Does the Psoas Hold Tension?

The psoas is closely linked to our nervous system. It activates during fight-or-flight, preparing the body to respond to stress. However, chronic tension—caused by prolonged stress, poor posture, or repetitive movement patterns—can leave us stuck in a heightened state, restricting breath and draining energy.

How to Release and Restore Balance

Rather than forcing the psoas to stretch, we invite it to soften. In Svaroopa® yoga, true release comes from safety, not effort. If we push too hard, the nervous system perceives threat and holds tighter. Instead, we guide ourselves and our students to trust the ground beneath us, allowing the body to unwind naturally with support.

By consciously relaxing the psoas, we signal safety to the body, activating the parasympathetic "rest and digest" response—leading to deeper breathing, better digestion, and a greater sense of ease.
