A Simple Start to Ayurveda: Sit-Relax-Eat

Did you know that 90% of Americans suffer from digestion problems such as gas, bloating, stomach pain, constipation, heartburn, and fatigue after eating? Ayurveda provides simple solutions to these common complaints by considering not only what you eat, but also how you consume your meals. Ayurveda says sit, relax, and then eat.

How many times have you seen someone munching on a sandwich while driving through traffic? Or, have you ever had lunch at your workstation because you couldn’t take the time to walk away? Our bodies need an uplifting and peaceful environment in order to process and absorb the nutrients from food. Ayurveda teaches us how important it is to sit down to eat. Never stand, walk, work or drive your way through a meal.

The act of eating is a life-giving, reverent act. Eating develops consciousness as well as physical health. When we pause to eat, we keep our awareness on the taste, texture, and smell of the food. This enhances digestion and assimilation, and ultimately our health and longevity.

Ayurveda also favors choosing seasonal, organic foods, and then preparing them consciously. Taking a moment of gratitude before eating is a sweet way to prepare your body and mind to receive nourishment.

Have you heard the saying “timing is everything”? Ayurveda encourages us to eat our largest meal while the sun is at its peak strength (lunch time). Why? Our inner sun (which is our digestive enzymes) is also at its peak at that time. Our body mimics the seasons and rhythm of nature. We are nature. Ayurveda teaches us to recognize nature as our body, and our body as nature.

Food is the keeper of the five elements, earth, air, fire, water and ether. We're made from the same ingredients. The nature of earth, humans and Oneness is called “Ayurveda”. Would you like to learn more?
