Svaroopa® Yoga

What is Svaroopa Yoga?

Svaroopa® Yoga is one of the primary styles of hatha yoga in America. It is known for its compassionate, restorative approach to transformation. It is widely recognized as a powerful tool for promoting healing and regaining strength, while opening the inner levels of transcendent experience. 

 

What’s a class like?

Each class begins with guided body awareness and breathing practice to soothe your mind and nervous system so you can slow down and prepare for conscious release.

 

Each yoga posture is cued step-by-step, allowing time to self-adjust and soften into a comfortable, aligned position.  You’ll remain in each position for 1-4 minutes. Blankets are used to support  your body and create symmetry and effectiveness.  Personalized adjustments enhance the healing effect. The poses are rigorous, without being vigorous, making the practice a good complement to high intensity physical training, and deeply transformational for those who immerse regularly. 

 

It's unique…just like you.

It’s not a one-size fit all practice. The physical emphasis is on releasing tension along the spine, beginning at the tailbone and progressing through each spinal area. The poses are carefully chosen to provide this opening and restore lost mobility and energy.  We recognize your tensions are as unique as you are, so we’re highly trained to show you how to adapt the positions accordingly. It's a science.

 

A key principle of Svaroopa® Yoga is support equals release. Through the support of props (blankets, blocks, chairs) your long-held tensions finally let down. You decompress physically and mentally. This has a restorative effect into all the systems of the body- nervous, digestive, respiratory, and circulatory.

 

What are the benefits?

Svaroopa® yoga classes leave you feeling deeply restored on all levels of being. You’ll have greater clarity, more energy, less stress and anxiety. Svaroopa® yoga uses effective yoga poses to reach and release tension held throughout your inner body, making space for energy to move.  The health of your body relies on your inner circulation of prana (life-force).  Svaroopa® Yoga is masterful at creating this energy flow.

 

Svaroopa® yoga creates internal space for your organs to rest by releasing the tensions in the front of your spine and pelvic area. Your protruding belly is not your fat; your internal organs bulge when squeezed tightly by stress, particularly spinal tension. Once released, blood supply, oxygen, nutrients and prana (life force energy) flow back into the area.  Your muscles automatically get stronger when excessively tight spinal muscles release.

 

Core opening is a game- changer on all levels.  The result is an intelligent, awake body and mind, and the unmistakable shift from stress to bliss. The goal is for each student to realize core release in each position and the corresponding effect on the mind. The benefits are physical, mental and more.

What does it mean?

The word comes from the ancient yoga text, Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. It means “your embodied true Self."  Your true Self is your 'spirit' or 'soul' ... the eternal essence underlying daily existence.  

 

The deeper purpose of Svaroopa yoga is to open you to an eternal sense of self, and then live from the experience.  It's the constant weaving of enlightenment into daily life. The result is lasting contentment and realization of full human potential.

Your body is wired for bliss, and Svaroopa® Yoga  specializes in creating a strong and balanced nervous system to support bliss. It’s accessible for brand new students, experienced yogis and students with physical limitations.  

 

Protocol for attending

Arrive 15 minutes before class begins to allow for time to set up your props and prepare for class to begin promptly at the time posted.  Wear loose, comfortable clothes.  Dress in layers…your body temperature may drop when you begin to relax.   You do not need a yoga mat for this class.
